Top 10 MUSTS for Every Bachelor Pad

This is a MUST read for guys looking to attract a girlfriend into their lives. I wrote this some time ago, but it is still totally relevant and HELPFUL...

You might be the coolest guy in the world, with great stories, successful career, killer clothes and an awesome social life. However, if your home is not equipped with these 10 essentials, that smooth first impression you made will head south as fast as geese in a snowstorm.

A woman should be excited to see your home. She has enjoyed getting to know you, and is now open to taking things to the next level. She arrives at your door, hoping that you can provide a cool, comfortable and romantic experience. Follow these tips and you'll do that plus more...

1) Clean Bathroom. This is number one for a reason. Please, please don't let her walk in there and find no toilet paper. Right now, go to the bathroom. If you are down to one roll (meaning, the ACTIVE one) stop reading this and go to the store. Buy at least 6 rolls to have on hand. Also, she should never see hair shavings scattered in the sink and a black ring around the tub. She sees this...you never see her again.

2) An Unusual or Exotic Coffee or Tea. If she doesn't drink alcohol, she will really appreciate this touch. A good place to find either item is in a gourmet grocery store. Get fresh ground coffee or fresh tea leaves. Coffee in a can or tea bags doesn't cut it here.

3) Entertainment. No Barry White or Marvin Gaye, they are just beyond comical and cliché. Try Portishead, Coldplay or Ben Harper. Also, have at least half a dozen movies that you can pull out in a moments notice. You are looking for something that sets a romantic, yet fun mood. Here are some suggestions: Don Juan DeMarco, Annie Hall, There's Something About Mary, Arthur, Casablanca, Hitch, and Sidewalks of New York are all great options.

4) One Special Recipe. You don't need the cooking expertise of Daniel Boulud, but it is important, not to mention impressive, that you be able to prepare at least one good meal. After selecting your signature dish, consult the local wine shop for the perfect match. A suggestion: baked fish is simple, healthy, elegant, and can be combined with a light vegetable or two. Also, go the extra mile by buying a small, tasty tart or cake from the local bakery for dessert. The result: an unforgettable, gourmet meal that separates you from the pack.

5) Non-fluorescent Mood Lighting. Overhead lighting tends to wash-out color and feel stark. Have areas lit by lamps, adding to the romantic mood. Also, if you have a lava lamp, toss that in the garbage along with the tie-dyed t-shirts. Or, at least hide them in the closet.

6) Wine. Always have 2 bottles of wine on hand, one red and one white. No need to go overboard, but don't skimp either and buy "Boone's Farm". $20 per bottle is plenty. Also, be sure to own wine glasses. Have at least four on hand, as they break easily.

7) Hide the Video Games. Nothing says "lazy, loser, and adolescent" like an X-box on the floor in front of your TV. Video games are female repellant. Why? I'll never know. It's like trying to uncover the mystery of why girls go to the bathroom in packs...

8) Family Photo. Let her know you came from somewhere; that you weren't dropped on earth last week in the bar where you met. It's certainly comforting for her to know this, but even better to SEE it. A solo picture of mom is a major plus here too.

9) Semi-Stocked Fridge. Make sure there is more than a bottle of ketchup and half a six pack of Bud. Have some snacks that you won't need to prepare. Ice cream, fresh fruit, chocolate, and cheese are all great, light foods. Also, for a sophisticated, simple snack try sliced tomatoes with basil and mozzarella. It bespeaks sophistication and intelligence, while not requiring hours of preparation.

10) Shorts and a Tee Shirt. Have a spare for her if she decides to stay over. Don't buy a pair of shorts with a size 25 waist; she'll either think they're from a previous girl or that you're a player. Get one that would fit you, but with a drawstring; very inconspicuous, and thoughtful.

Having a clean place can make up for a lack of any of these points. Keeping clean shows respect for your guests. At minimum, be sure the kitchen is clean with no old dishes in the sink, and no dirty clothes scattered on the floor. Most importantly - the bed MUST be made.

Overall your place needs to look neither fussy nor girly. This is a bachelor pad, so let it be obvious that a single man lurks within. Your place should reflect you and do so effectively. If you have any questions, invite a female friend over for lunch, and ask for her no-holds-barred opinion.

Be sure your home is inviting and comfortable for her first visit, so she wants to come back for a second...

Sirio: The Story of My Life and Le Cirque Overviews

The inside story of one of the world's most legendary restaurants—told by the visionary who created it
Sirio Maccioni is New York's most charismatic restaurateur—the brains, the energy, and the passion behind Le Cirque 2000. Now, for the first time, he reveals the incredible story of this landmark four-star restaurant, which has launched the careers of such world-class chefs as Jacques Torres and Daniel Boulud and won a host of prestigious awards, including the James Beard Foundation Restaurant of the Year Award (199-5) and "The Best Restaurant in the World" Reader's Choice Award from Condé Nast Traveler (200-3).

From a tough Tuscan childhood in 1930s Italy to the pinnacle of culinary success in the United States, Sirio recounts an eventful journey that is as magical and fantastic as Le Cirque itself. Throughout, 30 signature recipes and interviews with chefs (including Daniel Boulud, Michael Lomonaco, and Sottha Khunn), food writers (such as Ruth Reichl and Mimi Sheraton) and politicians, socialites, and celebrities (Rudy Giuliani, David Rockefeller, Bill Blass, and others) reveal Sirio's skill in handling the three rings of his unique culinary circus: its chefs, its clientele, and its cuisine.

"[Sirio] and his restaurant have come to symbolize all that is so cosmopolitan, so kinetic, so thrilling about New York. . . . Le Cirque remains both a gastronomic mecca and the premier social dining room." —James Villas, in Town & Country

Sirio Maccioni (New York, NY) is the owner of Le Cirque 2000 (New York, Las Vegas, and Mexico City) and Osteria del Circo (New York). Peter Elliot (New York, NY) is the host of the James Beard Award-winning radio show, The Bloomberg Executive Dining Guide.

Sirio: The Story of My Life and Le Cirque CustomerReview

If this isn't a story about small town boy does good, I don't know what is. I read the book while touring Tuscany, which made it even more special. If you love good food and have an appreciation for what it takes to run a restaurant, then you will love this book. Sirio is truly the ringmaster of the greatest show on earth. The restaurant business either makes you a better person or it gobbles you up and spits you out. Every night is showtime and the next person through the door is your biggest fan or your worst critic. Nobody knows that better than Sirio Maccioni and in the Tuscan hillsides he is practically a national treasure. It seems everybody knows Sirio, or wants to know him and for good reason. Italians love food and they love people. Sirio knows both better than anyone and he has given himself up to a life of entertaining others. Believe it or not, that is a huge sacrifice. Yes, he gets enjoyment from seeing others enjoy themselves but that often comes with huge personal sacrifices and tons of self discipline. He is the best and he gives people the inspiration to be their very best. The restaurant business is unlike any other. From waiters to chefs to busboys and bartenders, every night is showtime and if you put on a sour face you turn off the crowd and crash in a flaming ball of fire.
This is not a cookbook, it is a documentary. It is one of the best stories I have ever read about life, living and the pursuit of happiness. This book is about making yourself a better person and how to succeed in one of the toughest businesses in the world. I read a book a week and I don't believe in negative reviews. If you don't have something good to say, don't say it. I have read this book twice and I can't remember doing that very often.
We booked a room at the Palace before Christmas and my daughter Jennifer, got to experience Le Cirque. Two weeks later from Rome, we booked the Palace and tried to make reservations at Le Cirque only to find out that it had closed. Let me tell you that I am not alone when I say that the restaurant world is waiting to see where the next greatest show on earth will take place. Sirio can't possibly abandon Manhattan. It is, after all, the greatest stage for the best ringmaster the restaurant business has ever known. I can't wait to buy tickets!!!
Ciao Bella

Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Careme, the First Celebrity Chef Overviews

“Cuisinier, architect, and one of the most prolific writers of the 19th century, Carême was the founder of a classic cuisine that would influence generations of chefs. In this well-researched book, Ian Kelly deftly recounts the exploits of this remarkable man.” —JACQUES PÉPIN

Aunique feast of biography and Regency cookbook, Cooking for Kings takes readers on a chef’s tour of the palaces of Europe in the ultimate age of culinary indulgence.

Drawing on the legendary cook’s rich memoirs, Ian Kelly traces Antonin Carême’s meteoric rise from Paris orphan to international celebrity and provides a dramatic below-stairs perspective on one of the most momentous, and sensuous, periods in European history—First Empire Paris, Georgian England, and the Russia of War and Peace.

Carême had an unfailing ability to cook for the right people in the right place at the right time. He knew the favorite dishes of King George IV, the Rothschilds and the Romanovs; he knew Napoleon’s fast-food requirements, and why Empress Josephine suffered halitosis.

Carême’s recipes still grace the tables of restaurants the world over. Now classics of French cuisine, created for, and named after, the kings and queens for whom he worked, they are featured throughout this captivating biography. In the phrase first coined by Carême, “You can try them yourself.”

Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Careme, the First Celebrity Chef CustomerReview

In addition to telling the story of the great chef, this book also provides a lot of insight into the history of food and its evolution, and some of the "dark" side of being a chef during the days of Careme. His health suffered mightily from the fumes from the poorly ventilated kitchens during the time, and the long hours that he worked pushed him into exhaustion, further compromising his health.

I found this full of detailed research and interesting anecdotes. The recipes included were also very insightful, and well chosen. It was also written with a good pace and narrative style. Would highly recommend. I've moved on to "Escoffier: The King of Chefs."

After selecting your signature dish that is in the wine-shop perfectly suited for each other. One suggestion: baked fish is simple, healthy, elegant, and can combine with a plant light or two. Even go the extra mile for the purchase of a small and tasty pie or cake from the bakery for dessert. The result: an unforgettable gourmet dinner, which is separated from the group.

5) No fluorescent Mood Lighting.Overhead tends to wash out the color and feel strong. Are areas of lighting, and adding to the mood romantic. Even if you walk a lava lamp in the trash along with the T-shirt batik. Or at least they hide in the closet.

Ice cream, fresh fruit, chocolate and cheese are all large, light meals. Even for a sophisticated, easy snack try tomatoes with basil and mozzarella. There is evidence of refinement and sophistication, while hours of preparation required.

With a clean place, you can subscribe to a shortage of one of these points. Clean shows respect for your guests. For at least this is the kitchen with no dishes in the sink to clean old and dirty clothes strewn on the floor without. Above all - must readmade.

Overall, his place must look neither fussy nor girly. This is a bachelor pad, it was obvious that lurks within a single individual. Your place should be the thought and not so effective. If you have questions, ask a friend to lunch, and ask for his no-holds-barred opinion.

Griffin: Save your loved ones with a Memory Cook Book

After the death of a loved one hand, some families are covered by the clothes of her family. Other families compile memory lbs. I have something for my family, I made a cookbook of memory. After the death of my mother-in-law my sister-in-law, and it seemed an old man with his recipe. In fact, there were four boxes, and the recipes in bulk, were divided into categories.

There were handwritten recipes, many newspaper and magazine clippings, and many duplicates. Wethrew duplicate recipes and family favorites saved - Recipes, enjoy the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In reading the recipes brought back memories of family picnics, holiday dinners, snacks, and Nana for her three teenage boys prepared.

I typed the recipes (one per side) and fill in a three-ring notebook. The title of the book "Favorite Recipes from Nana's recipe boxes." Roofs are on holiday stationery with a border cotton candy. Any BindingNana had a picture of it. Spray to protect the recipes and I drip into plastic sleeves notebook. There were only 25 recipes, so I did not index it. However, I did write a brief introduction, and contained a story that is still clear in my head.

Nana was Sunday evening at 1 hour after the meal, announced that dinner would be cake and ice cream. I laughed because I thought Nana was a joke. But Nana, the only person I've ever known who would eat coldOf butter wrapped in sugar, had a weakness for sweets, and the dinner was as advertised. We had a big bowl of French vanilla and juicy slices of yellow cake with frosting Penuche. What a memory.

Since the book was a glimpse into the family history, I typed the recipes, like Nana, she wrote, also terms such as "chilling the fridge, and references to family and friends. I grouped the pages into groups, put the pages of the notebook and put rubber Spatula inside. Then I wrapped the books in holiday paper and ribbon and tied spoon each.

Much love went into cookbooks that could not wait to give them to family members on Christmas morning. A couple of fantasy gifts were exchanged, but my homemade gifts were the hit of the day. Family members told stories of Nana, as he peeled their pound of baking. If you are a sensible way to commemorate a loved one, think of creating a memory Koch> Book.

My Cookbook stories about the meals you need to connect with spark, and the older generation of younger ones. I had no time to put more pictures in books, but a picture on every page of the book would be very special. Now you're probably wondering about the recipes. My favorite is the recipe for a farce. Even if I do not fudge, I love the ending. Here's the recipe, as Nana wrote many years ago.

Luxury Real Estate Marketing - Become a Celebrity Agent

Luxury real estate professionals in the market has to fight for market leadership has become a lesson from famous chefs and celebrity agents in their market. Here's an example of a French celebrity chef who has created a big buzz-worthy take on the story with his masterful, all-American hamburgers.

Some time ago we happened to take Martha Stewart, in which their favorite burger, the DB Burger on television. When we are in Las Vegas, we felt compelled to go to> Daniel Boulud (DB) Brasserie at the Wynn Hotel on the Strip.

Celebrity chef Daniel Boulud has created a version of the classic grass hamburger meat, which is filled with red wine braised beef ribs (off the bone) and foie. It 'been a good thing, it was the truffle season, when we share the DB Burger ($ 35) as the price of the DB Burger Royale, his pièce de résistance, a double portion of fresh black truffles go for $ 120.

The hamburger DBon the basis of a housewife who serves toasted parmesan and poppy seed bun. The bread itself was worth the ticket price, as Chef Boulud imports of flour for bread and pastries from France. The side of pommes soufflé was so delicious that you expect for a return trip before you order French fries again.

Daniel Boulud selected a niche market unchallenged, the luxury "Burger", and has created a unique offering with exceptional value. This processYou find a niche where it dominates little or no competition and market space is an important step towards a celebrity as a real estate agent luxury.

In case of competing offers winning chef, a different version of a hamburger as extravagant as a way of recognizing that he or she would be a sort of "me-too", which as of yesterday. Chef Boulud its application can not be promoted in this category. It helped that he has become famous in New York and catering also for its restaurants. But the buzz created by famous DB Burger Chef Boulud made famous in the minds of potential customers outside the immediate market, which may never heard of him before.

What can you do a marketing luxury real estate professional game to qualify for a niche market uncontested offer exceptional value? What can be done using public relations to create buzz? What a story, you can create, which are distinguished from the crowd and allow to beCelebrity Assistant?

Serious Barbecue: Smoke, Char, Baste, and Brush Your Way to Great Outdoor Cooking CustomerReview

I love this cookbook--everything I have made so far has gotten rave reviews. I also appreciate a cookbook author that not only provides killer recipes, but also educates along the way.

One of the secrets to the great results is the way the spices and flavors are layered on in multiple steps. Are the recipes overly involved--I don't think so--the recipes go beyond the one-step marinade or one-step rub type recipe, but the results are worth the extra effort. There are certainly recipes that can take all day or all weekend to prepare, but there are others like the tri-tip or pork loin that I have made on a week night.

The only ding is the cookbook itself. It lacks a table of contents, which I miss when I am not sure what I want to cook or am looking for something new to try. The biggest annoyance is that the cookbook does not have a lay-flat binding, so its kinda a pain to work with, but don't let either of these issues dissuade you from getting this cookbook.

Burger Bar: Build Your Own Ultimate Burgers CustomerReview

This cookbook is far more than a book about burgers. It is a book about great flavor combinations, cooking technique and presentation, all brought to you through manageable recipes. Most burger recipes are paired with a "condiment" recipe, some of which can be time consuming, but have no fear, don't feel like making the "spicy aioli" from scratch... don't bother making your own mayonnaise, just take out the Hellman's and add Chef Hubert Keller's additional ingredients (worked for me - - I'm not making mayo).
The "Mustard Seed Chicken Burger" (including a grated apple that adds the moisture lacking in most poultry burgers - without adding any flavor that doesn't belong in a burger) and the "BLT Turkey CLub Burger" are both amazing, easy to make and most importantly result in clean plates from the pickiest of eaters.

Jay McInerney on wine?Yes, Jay McInerney on wine! The best-selling novelist has turned his command of language and flair for metaphor on the world of wine, providing this sublime collection of untraditional musings on wine and wine culture that is as fit for someone looking for “a nice Chardonnay” as it is for the oenophile.

On champagne:“Is Dom Pérignon worth four bottles of Mo‘t & Chandon? If you are a connoisseur, a lover, a snob, or the owner of a large oceangoing craft, the answer . . . is probably yes.”
On the difficulty of picking a wine for a vegetarian meal:“Like boys and girls locked away in same-sex prep schools, most wines yearn for a bit of flesh.”
On telling the difference between Burgundy and Bordeaux:“If it’s red, French, costs too much, and tastes like the water that’s left in the vase after the flowers have died, it’s probably Burgundy.”
On the fungus responsible for the heavenly flavor of the dessert wine called Sauternes:“Not since Baudelaire smoked opium has corruption resulted in such beauty.”

Bright lights: Krug, Latour, Lafite, Montrose. Big cities: Montalcino, Hampstead, Reims, Geyserville. Welcome to Bacchus & Me: Adventures in the Wine Cellar, bestselling novelist Jay McInerney's mixed four-case lot of wine essays culled primarily from his output of "Uncorked" pieces written for House & Garden magazine. Reflecting the author's wit and opinion, it's tasty and stylish stuff. And nestled between glossy pages of photos depicting, say, a 396-square-foot TriBeCa loft decorated with a pair of Eames chairs purchased at a Brooklyn swap meet for , McInerney's blend of self-deprecation (his "eyebrows raised and jaw dropped" when H&G editors broached his name as wine columnist) and irreverence (on straw-covered Chianti bottles: the "bong component of choice in dorm rooms around the world") is refreshing juice. Unfortunately, as a compilation, it serves more to unmask a Eurocentric name-dropper: the bon-mot-coining D2 dilettante on an expense account who got the gig because he knew the editor. It's distressing, because there's so much to like here: "A Ticket to the Veneto" is a sparkling meld of ego and yeast; questioning whether or not to cellar wine, he concludes, "What could be more all-American than instant gratification?"; and his dead-on description of a Port hangover is quintessential McInerney. But numerous repetitions, imperceptible when published monthly, irritate when separated not by 30 days but 30 pages: Sauvignon Blanc's aroma of "pipi du chat" is funny the first time you read it, less so two essays later; likewise you won't find a single California piece that doesn't contain the words "dude" or "Helen Turley." And while it's admirable to break the mould of stuffy wine writing, McInerney's a bit long in the tastevin to adopt a "Wine Brat" posture comparing, for example, Martinelli Jackass Hill Zin more to "Free Bird" than "Jumpin' Jack Flash," or describing his first sip of Mouton "like hearing Nirvana on Saturday Night Live." Blame it on the editor, or maybe it just depends on how you devour Bacchus & Me. Sipped slowly, McInerney's words taste of the passionate amateur oenophile and skilled raconteur. Gulp 'em down and the finish is of the bestselling bon vivant with a blank check. --Tony Mason

Bacchus and Me: Adventures in the Wine Cellar CustomerReview

"Since I have no real training in the official vocabulary of wine tasting--or for that matter, in gardening--you are more likely to find me comparing a wine to a movie, a poem, or a pop song than to an herb or a flower. These are the notes of a passionate amateur, a wordsmith with a wine jones" (p. xxiv).

Jay Mcinerney (1955) is not only a bestselling novelist (Bright Lights, Big City; Ransom; Story of My Life; Brightness Falls; The Last of the Savages; The Good Life), he is also an amateur oenephile (a "grape nut") and the wine columnist for House & Garden magazine. In his first compilation of wine essays drawn from his "Uncorked" column, McInerney proves he is "the best wine writer in America" (Salon), writing about his "first love" (Bordeaux), his initial prejudice against California wines ("Ripe, yes. Fruity, yes. So is Baywatch."), his nervous admiration for Helen Turley ("the wine goddess"), the "cult of Condrieu," champagne ("Beautiful Bubbleheads"), Burgundy ("If it's red, French, costs too much, and tastes like the water that's left in the vase after the flowers have died and rotted, it's probably Burgundy."), the most romantic wines, and pairing wine with food. McInerney brings his unique gift of terroir, wit, and opinion to these essays, making his book a must read for anyone who, like me, has a passion for really good wine and really good writing.
